To kick off this edition of our series, we’re thrilled to introduce a man who simply loves what he does, turning a lifelong obsession with Ford RS’s and classic performance cars into a bespoke, highly recognised niche bodyshop business.
Tell us a bit about yourself, starting with your name:
Gavin Pink
Where are you based and what does a typical day look like for you?
I’m based in Hertfordshire.
A typical day starts early, there’s no time for sleep! I like to begin each morning with a clear set of goals, then head into the workshop to catch up with the team and map out the day ahead. Of course, by about 10:00 am, those plans have usually gone out the window!
The workshop is always busy, with customer enquiries coming in constantly while we work on a variety of restoration projects. Alongside that, I keep our social media up to date, film content for our YouTube channel, and think of new ideas to keep things fresh.
At the end of every day, the whole team gets involved in a workshop clean-up. We believe in leaving everything exactly as we’d want to find it the next morning. I’m normally home by around 6:30 pm, but the day isn’t over yet, I’m still answering emails, replying to social media comments, and taking the odd phone call. Before long, I’m usually asleep on the sofa… then it’s time to do it all again the next day!
The First Pay check: What was your very first job, and how did your career path evolve into what you do today?
My first job was working as a mechanic in a local garage when I was just 13 years old.
From there, I briefly ran my own business before joining a specialist MG restoration company, where I spent around five or six years. I then moved to a minibus company, looking after a fleet of around 50 vehicles, managing the mechanical side while also carrying out paintwork.
Eventually, I decided to go back into business for myself, and that’s when Gavin Pink at the Paint Shop was born. Around ten years later, I can honestly say I’ve never looked back.
What was the “spark” that led you into your current industry?
Without a doubt, my dad. Some of my happiest childhood memories are of working on cars alongside him. Those moments gave me my passion for the industry and inspired the career I’ve built today.
Company Info. What is the company name you work for now, and what position do you hold?
I’m the owner of Gavin Pink at the Paint Shop.
What services do they provide, and what is the website address?
We specialise in high-quality restoration and refinishing for classic, modern classic, and sports cars. We’ve been restoring customers’ pride and joy for around ten years.
The Automotive Obsession
What age were you when you first realised you’re a petrolhead?
I was probably around nine or ten years old when my dad took me to Brands Hatch to watch a friend race in Formula Ford. That day really ignited something in me, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
What was the first car you ever owned, and how much did you pay for it?
My first car was a Mini 1275 GT. At 6’4″, I practically had to fold myself in and out of it, but I absolutely loved it! I didn’t actually buy it either, I swapped it for my sister’s Mini 🙂
What cars do you currently own (including your daily driver)?
I currently own a Cosworth-powered Ford Sierra tarmac rally car, while my everyday vehicle is a Renault Traffic Sport van.
Which car do you most regret selling or losing?
Without question, my Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000. At the time, I never imagined just how sought after they’d become. That’s definitely one I’d love to have back.
If money and garage space were no object, what is your ultimate “dream” car and why?
It would have to be a Ford Escort Cosworth. I’ve always loved the shape, the performance, and everything the car represents.
Describe your ideal Sunday morning drive, where are you going, and what’s playing on the radio?
A drive through the Devon countryside on a sunny morning, with Madness playing on the stereo. That sounds pretty perfect to me.
Manual or Automatic?
It really depends on the car. Some cars deserve a manual gearbox, while others suit an automatic!
Electric cars – Yes or No? (Give reason)
For me, no. I appreciate the technology, but I think cars are about emotion, character, and soul. Enthusiasts build a connection with their cars, and for me that’s something electric cars just haven’t managed to capture yet.
Hard Roof or Convertible or both?
Hard roof every time! You need something to protect your head if it all goes wrong and you end up rolling down a hill!
Track Day or Weekend Cruise?
Track day, every time.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to buy their first classic/performance car?
Take someone experienced with you when you go to view it. A second pair of knowledgeable eyes can save you a lot of money and heartache. Better still … take me with you!
Finally, Beyond the Car Obsession
When you aren’t behind the wheel or under a hood, how do you spend your time? (Hobbies, other interest’s etc).
When I’m not in the workshop, you’ll usually find me out on my mountain bike. I love weekend riding trips, especially through the French Alps.
Family is incredibly important to me, so weekends often involve a barbecue with everyone together, followed by watching Spurs. If I’m relaxing indoors, there’s a good chance I’m browsing the VINTTRO website!
