As children, many of us had lifestyle poster cars pinned to our bedroom walls. It’s a topic I never tire of discussing; whenever I’m asked which machine, manufacturer or brand takes the crown, it inevitably sparks a brilliant debate. The question of what truly constitutes the ‘ultimate’ car, and how it shapes the automotive lifestyle we aspire to live, is one that completely divides opinion.
Depending on the decade you grew up in, your wall was likely claimed by legends like the Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari F40, McLaren F1, or perhaps later icons like the Pagani Zonda and Bugatti Veyron. Whichever you leaned toward, these cars fueled our automotive obsessions.
Trying to select a definitive top 10 is a tough challenge. Ultimately, I’m bound to fail in someone’s eyes, so be prepared to disagree! One thing is for sure, every car on my list is a petrol-infused blend of incredible styling and engineering excellence, stretching from yesteryear to the present day. They represent more than just speed; they are the ultimate expression of a passion-driven lifestyle, defining the culture and the eras they ruled.
Here are my top 10.
10. Porsche 911
Starting at number ten, we are heading straight back to the 1980s. Porsche absolutely hit it out of the park with the 911 Carrera and its massive, unmistakable “whale tail” spoiler. It was a phenomenal poster car, and one I fondly remember seeing on the shelves of the Athena poster shops back in the day.

9. Ferrari F40
The ultimate contender for the most popular bedroom pin-up supercar in history. Manufactured between 1987 and 1992, many purists still believe the F40 is the greatest road-going Ferrari ever built. It was raw, twin-turbocharged, stripped-out, and capable of cracking the magic 200 mph barrier. Designed to celebrate Ferrari’s 40th anniversary, it was famously the final Prancing Horse personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself. While it isn’t quite as rare as some other limited-run Ferraris, that hasn’t stopped its value from soaring deep into seven-figure territory.
8. McLaren F1
By the time 1998 rolled around, I was admittedly a bit too old to be pinning new posters to my bedroom wall. However, I distinctly remember the absolute frenzy surrounding a naturally aspirated production road car hitting a top speed of 240.1 mph. The McLaren F1 completely ruffled the feathers of Ferrari and Lamborghini. Like the Countach’s scissor doors, the F1 was entirely unique due to its ground breaking central driving position. Even today’s hyperarcs are measured against the F1. Because of its extreme rarity, its place in the automotive pantheon, and its investment value, continues to skyrocket.
7. Lotus Esprit
I can see that poster clearly in my mind right now: a Lotus Esprit Mk1 clad in the iconic black-and-gold John Player Special (JPS) livery. This was yet another car that cemented its legendary status courtesy of James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me. Mind you, I’m still not entirely convinced that driving one into the sea will actually transform it into a functioning submarine.

6. Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
As a massive fan of Ford RS cars from the late 60s to the early 90s, I vividly remember when Ford launched the original Sierra RS Cosworth, including the legendary RS500 edition with its prominent double rear spoiler. This car crushed the efforts of the Mercedes 190E Cosworth into oblivion on the track. It’s a true icon for me; I distinctly remember proudly sticking a picture of it to the side of my old Snap-On toolbox when I was an apprentice panel beater back in the day.
5. Jaguar E-Type
It just had to be in the top five, didn’t it? Enzo Ferrari supposedly called it “the most beautiful car in the world.” I’ve always taken that with a pinch of salt, if he did say it, he’d undoubtedly had a bit too much Italian red wine that day! Joking aside, the E-Type is an extraordinarily beautiful machine. Many will argue it deserves the number one spot on this list. That stunning silhouette and impossibly long bonnet make it a masterclass in classic design.
4. Ferrari Testarossa
Films and television have always had a massive influence on my automotive taste, and the Testarossa will always sit firmly in my top five poster cars simply because of Miami Vice. The insane, Pininfarina-designed aesthetics of the Testarossa were directly proportional to its bedroom-wall appeal. In an 80s era where bold styling was rife and many manufacturers tried and failed to stand out, the Testarossa reigned supreme. Those classic side strakes appealed equally to schoolboys and city slickers alike.

3. Lamborghini Miura
What thoughts pop into your head when you think of the Miura? For me, it’s always the opening sequence of The Italian Job. An orange example races through the Alps before crashing in a tunnel, bursting into flames, and being unceremoniously tossed over a cliff by the Italian Mafia using a JCB. I still wince today watching that scene! Built from 1966 to 1973, it was another creation by the prolific Marcello Gandini. The Miura was arguably the world’s very first true supercar, powered by that glorious, mid-mounted Lamborghini V12. Are they worth the £2 million price tags they command today? Absolutely.

2. The Aston Martin DB5
I make no apologies for this one. Like so many children, I was, and still am, a massive James Bond fan. We all know there is only one true 007 icon: the DB5. End of story! Made famous in Gold finger, this silky grand tourer was built between 1963 and 1965. It boasted 282 horsepower, enabling it to reach 145 mph and do 0–60 mph in around 7 seconds. The DB5 remains one of the most recognisable shapes on earth. Massive respect to anyone lucky enough to own this English icon today.
1. Lamborghini Countach
The ultimate poster car of the 1980s. Designed in the 1970s by Marcello Gandini of the Bertone studio, the Countach took wedge-shaped automotive creations to another planet. Featuring flat, trapezoidal panels and those jaw-dropping scissor doors, this icon could hit 60 mph in approximately five seconds, which was absolutely ground breaking for its day. Name any other car that still holds the exact same visual appeal to so many people nearly 50 years later. Simply put, there isn’t one.
